(CNN) Only the first round is over, and already March Madness has delivered some major upheavals.
So far, No. 1 seed Purdue University, No. 2 seed Arizona Wildcats and No. 4 seed Virginia Cavaliers have been unceremoniously eliminated from the tournament, succumbing to 16 seed Fairleigh. Dickinson, No. 15 seed Princeton Tigers and No. 13 seed Furman Paladins respectively.
Fairleigh Dickinson’s 63-58 victory over Purdue was only the second time in NCAA men’s tournament history that a No. 16 seed has beaten a No. 1 seed, and his players went on to flooded the field to celebrate.
“We just have faith in what we’re doing and our guys are so tough and competitive,” UDF head coach Tobin Anderson said on the TNT show.
“I love our guys. They’re tough. They’re great. They played hard. It’s an unbelievable win. It’s unbelievable. We shocked the world.”
According to the NCAA, just 2.36% of completed entries in the Men’s Bracket Challenge Game predicted a FDU win over Purdue, the second-lowest percentage of any team in the field.
The shocking win also means the last hopes of anyone performing the nigh impossible task of predicting perfect support have been completely wiped out, the NCAA noted.
Any hope of completing a perfect slice had already been dashed on Thursday after Princeton’s improbable 59-55 win over Arizona and the Paladins’ stunning 68-67 win over Virginia.
Princeton beat Arizona to advance to the second round.
Princeton’s victory alone left only 0.065% of men’s brackets intact, out of the millions of brackets completed, according to NCAA March Madness Twitter.
“A year after all the slices erupted in Game 28, no one is still perfect after Game 25 of the tournament,” the NCAA said.
For much of the first half, the result teetered on the edge before a quick start to the second half put Arizona in control.
But, trailing by 10 points with eight minutes left, the Tigers got back into the game and won a famous victory.
The Paladins also snatched their unlikely victory after making a comeback, overcoming a 12-point deficit at one point, to topple Virginia.
“You know, this game is — interesting might be the word I would use,” Virginia coach Tony Bennett said afterwards, reflecting on his team’s loss.
“You feel like, we got it, we got it, and then all of a sudden in an instant, it changes in the end.”
