It’s no secret how bad drinking soda can be for your overall health. But, if you don’t already know, drinking soda every day can be very dangerous. Not only does daily soda consumption lead to weight gain and tooth decay, it can also lead to heart disease and even cancer!
Besides the fact that these drinks are loaded with chemicals and artificial flavors, the biggest problem with sodas is the amount of added sugar they contain. Frequent consumption of sugary drinks can block weight loss in the abdomen. While almost any kind of soda, whether it’s diet soda (which isn’t as healthy as they claim!), fruit flavored soda, or a can of Coke, you’re still harming your your overall health with every sip.

In 2021, Coca-Cola was ranked the top soft drink company in the United States. Although popular (and delicious!), coke is not a healthy brand of soda for weight loss. There are several reasons for this: its high sugar content, high calorie content, lack of nutrients and negative health effects like heart disease.
“Coke contains high amounts of sugar, which can lead to weight gain and negatively impact overall health,” Mordi says. “A single 12-ounce can of Coke contains about 39 grams of sugar, almost double the recommended daily sugar intake for adults.” Coke also offers fan-favorite flavors like Cherry Coke, Diet Coke, Vanilla Coke, and more.
“Coke is also high in calories. A 12-ounce can of Coke contains about 140 calories, which can add up quickly if consumed regularly,” adds Mordi. “Coke doesn’t provide any significant nutritional value. It’s basically just sugar and water, with some added flavors and colors.” If you regularly consume Coca-Cola, it could not only lead to weight gain, but also obesity, type 2 diabetes and tooth decay. So if weight loss is the goal, it’s best to avoid regular sipping on Coca-Cola.

And, like Coke, Sprite is not a healthy brand of soda for weight loss due to its sugar content, lack of nutrients, and negative side effects. “Sprite, like Coke, contains high amounts of sugar, which can lead to weight gain and negatively impact overall health. A single 12-ounce can of Sprite contains approximately 38 grams of sugar, which nearly matches the recommended daily intake of sugar for adults,” says Mordi. “Sprite is also high in calories. A 12-ounce can of Sprite contains approximately 140 calories, which can add up quickly if consumed regularly.” Ouch! That’s why it’s not good for weight loss.
And, another popular soda brand that is not good for weight loss. Like Coca-Cola and Sprite, Dr. Pepper is high in sugar and lacks the nutrients your body needs. “A single 12-ounce can of Dr. Pepper contains about 40 grams of sugar, which is almost double the recommended daily sugar intake for adults,” Mordi says. “Dr. Pepper is also high in calories. A 12-ounce can of Dr. Pepper contains approximately 150 calories, which can add up quickly if consumed regularly.” It’s basically sugar and water, with some added flavors and colors. So overall, it’s best to limit or avoid soda intake if you’re trying to lose weight.
Even though America loves it, soda isn’t something you should have every day if you’re planning on losing weight. Now that you know more about the effects of sodas and which brands to look out for, you might find it much easier to find a healthier option when you’re craving a soft drink. If you still want that carbonated taste, opt for kombucha instead! Not only is kombucha lower in calories and sugar, but it also promotes a healthier gut because it’s rich in beneficial probiotics.
